On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
