The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
