The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new initialism came to light a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts such as child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for physicians to care for a young patient who has lost their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, just as it denies everything it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what international harmony manifests as.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
