The A$150 Million Players Evolving into a Human Highlight Reel
The National Basketball Association season starts this week, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Aussie pair of biggest hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are without a roster spot.
Their absence indicates a changing of the guard, as Australian guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for playoff aspirants, with recently signed huge contracts establishing them as some of the country's highest sporting income generators.
They aren't the only ones. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for playing time around the league, including veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
Following lengthy discussions with the Bulls, the guard ultimately signed his new deal worth US$100 million ($153m) over four years recently. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is cheap for his role and reputation as a primary ball-handler. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the young star begins this year with much to prove.
After being moved by the Thunder at the start of last season, Giddey observed as his old team charged to the NBA championship without him. As the Chicago aim to reach the postseason in the less competitive East, he will have to show his scoring and defence are starter-worthy or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
Daniels agreed to the identical contract as Giddey this week, and after his MIP honor last season, the Atlanta guard’s trajectory has taken off in the city following his exit from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the league’s best defensive specialists, and led the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg – more than one whole takeaway per match greater than the total of second place.
Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be successful this season as a secondary ballhandler and elite defender as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his long-range game, which was below league average last year, and keep enhance his distribution and driving, Daniels could become one of the association's most well-rounded players.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Indiana forward Furphy has burst onto the scene as a crowd favorite in the state following a succession of spectacular slam dunks in exhibition games. His athletic displays prompted league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “best white dunker we’ve seen in a while”, and an opportunity to the mid-season slam dunk competition could be on the table.
After logging just 8 mpg per game over 50 games in his debut season, the ex- Maribyrnong College player is in contention for a Pacers rotation that might lean towards youth following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard the Sydney native dropped in the June draft all the way to the second round, where Eastern Conference contenders the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavs are front-runners to reach the Finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a rookie taken in the late picks to see significant playing minutes. But the Sydney product has seen time in exhibition play, and his pro-level shooting offers him a opportunity to contribute.
Minutes Crunch Looms for Experienced Group
Seasoned centre Jock Landale has a opportunity to claim the starting five spot in the Grizzlies given top prospect Zach Edey will miss the opening of the campaign after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see consistent minutes if the team find themselves competitive. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is likely to be used as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In the Hornets, Josh Green’s off-season shoulder surgery has left him with no return date to come back. The player still has a deal for the upcoming year, but will not want to give his colleagues at the developing Hornets an excessive advantage. And injury has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has missed important exhibition chances in Dallas.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Additionally, there are those who are not expected to see much, if any, game action this season. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but seems to be primarily a big brother ensuring Anthony Edwards in check.
Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be developed by the Wolves through their affiliate team. Other first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be aiming to earn minutes with Proctor for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a workout video shared on his accounts recently, demonstrating the veteran is still in form and determined on landing another NBA contract.
Simmons' intentions is uncertain after an off-season in Australia, angling and using with a Sherrin. Although he posted on Instagram recently to reject suggestions he was done, the 29-year-old – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
