NY Launches Portal for Residents to Report ICE Videos Following Arrests of Four American Citizens
The state AG has launched a recent reporting form urging residents to share photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement around New York. This move follows a day after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted NYC's Chinatown, triggering widespread outcry.
American Citizens Held During ICE Operation
A US congressman announced during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were arrested and detained for "nearly 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations erupted in the city on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker deserves to reside free from terror," state officials declared in a release.
"If you witnessed and recorded immigration enforcement yesterday, I encourage you to provide that footage with us. We are dedicated to assessing these accounts and investigating any legal breaches."
Submission Process
The platform includes options to submit images and video footage of the operation, as well as a field to specify location information. Before submitting, users must tick a checkbox that confirms that "the office could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, such as in a court case or government document."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say featured more than 50 federal agents, took place in a popular area of the city where imitation purses, items, goods and additional items are regularly available en masse – frequently to tourists.
Videos of the operation depict numerous covered and weaponized personnel restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of locals followed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored truck was also seen traveling down the city streets.
Political Response
During a Wednesday press conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be detained for unjustly." He clarified the citizens were freed on the following day with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman remarked. "This is a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for the government to deploy the armed forces to halt conflict that they have created."
Broad Criticism
Anger over the immigration operation escalated – all three political contenders denounced the operation, as did NY's governor.
"Yet again, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, not safety. It has to end," a contender wrote.
The city's community groups spoke out also.
"ICE descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This raid had nothing to do with citizen protection and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," stated the leader of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the organization has claimed it does not apprehend US citizens. Nevertheless, external research has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the start of the current administration.
Ongoing Trend
ICE raids have been becoming more common in the state and across the US recently.
A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the existing leadership. Rallies against ICE are commonplace including accusations of force and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a document filed by legal entities claimed healthcare failures of expectant mothers in detention centers.
