New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
