France will start intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
