However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have also begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently feature them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to form a group."

Historic Recognition

The group have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
