The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
