Political Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon are furious over the fact that Paul Biya has secured an eighth presidential term

Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has declared that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over accusations that he provoked "violent post-election demonstrations".

A minimum of four protesters have been lost their lives during clashes between police and military and protesters since Cameroon's election on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth term in office.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he was the true winner, a claim disputed by the incumbent party, the CPDM.

Forceful measures by police and security officers on protesters have alarmed the international community, with the UN, African Union and EU calling for restraint.

Official's Accusations

Earlier this week, Nji charged the opposition figure of organising what he described as "illegal" rallies causing the fatalities, and also condemned him for announcing success in the electoral contest.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "associates involved in an subversive plot" will also be prosecuted.

Poll Figures

Paul Biya, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, won the 12 October election with 53.7% of the vote, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is remains silent to the official announcement to prosecute him, but he had before declared that he would not accept a rigged election - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

When results were announced, he claimed that armed men shot on protesters assembled near his house in Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 civilians.

Investigation Launched

Recently, the government official revealed that an investigation would be started into unrest before and after the announcement of the election results.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved were killed," he said, without giving a exact count of protesters who have been lost their lives in the incidents.

The minister added that several officers of the law enforcement also sustained major harm.

Present Conditions

While the interior minister insisted the state of affairs throughout Cameroon was now manageable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in various areas of the nation, especially in urban centers, where protesters established obstructions on Tuesday, and set fire to rubber on the streets.

Observers caution that the political turmoil could push the nation into a political crisis.
