Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over Bots, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode titled Relaxed Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough setup but features a few notable changes:
- Each team includes only eight human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Actions done by real players grant full XP, while bot actions offer lower rewards.
- Just a pair of locations can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
- Features like Player tags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, this mode lives up to its title: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, as it gives additional choices for gamers seeking different methods to have fun with the game. However, if video games have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 players are mad.
Player Responses: Anger to Support
"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," states one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," comments a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user notes, "I have no idea where we are headed with this game," while someone else lists all the issues they consider to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," while another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Criticisms and Player Input
Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase wait times more extended for other modes due to the sheer number of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, a major grievances is that a previous feature was meant to provide full XP, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to remove bot farms from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base meeting them halfway, as per forum feedback. A different user labels this mode as the developers "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Future Prospects: Adjustments Be Made?
If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something so far with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Tasks that were overly hard were adjusted very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they will not hesitate to change it again.
