Arrangements for Putin-Trump Talks Delayed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration said the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming Trump had pressured him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, indicating that freezing the front line would only amount to a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday came ahead of reports that the US was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he commented.
