Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
