A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
